From November 1 to 30, 2024
This November, the Sainte-Justine Youth Tree of Lights campaign is back for a fifth year—and it’s more ambitious than ever! Building on the extraordinary momentum of the first four annual editions, the campaign is an opportunity for private schools across Quebec to shine the spotlight on their commitment to Sainte Justine, its patients, and its medical staff.
Private school students will help illuminate the base of the Sainte Justine Tree of Lights by asking friends and family to donate $5 per bulb. Their efforts will kick off this flagship holiday fundraising campaign, and the total amount raised will be dramatically unveiled at the tree-lighting ceremony. Students who raise more than $250 will be entered into a draw to win 2 plane tickets donated by the Air Canada Foundation!
Together, let’s send a message of hope to Sainte-Justine this holiday season. Because there’s nothing more powerful than young people coming together to help their peers.
Sainte-Justine, a home away from home
Collège Saint-Maurice
Even before Charlotte arrived in Quebec, the teams at CHU Sainte-Justine were waiting for her. The little girl and her parents, Martin and Josiane, were travelling all the way from China. Thanks to Sainte-Justine’s internationally renowned expertise, Charlotte immediately received treatment for multiple conditions, some of which were life-threatening.
Now undergoing dental and orthodontic treatment following the closure of her cleft palate, Charlotte smiles when she thinks about the life she enjoys here thanks to Sainte-Justine.
Growing beyond the constraints of diabetes
Collège Esther-Blondin
At the age of 5, Édouard learned that he had type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition. After receiving this difficult news, he and his family were taken under the wing of the experts at the Sainte-Justine diabetes clinic, who helped them navigate their new reality. Despite his illness, Édouard is now thriving as an athlete, student, and mentor to other young people living with diabetes.
He is determined to light a beacon of hope for those going through a similar journey to his own.
Seeing the beauty of the world before illness takes her vision away
Collège Saint-Paul
Sometimes, a diagnosis changes the course of an entire life. After Mia and two of her three siblings were diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative condition that causes vision loss, their parents felt a sense of urgency to show their children as much of the world as possible before the illness took away their vision.
In 2022, the whole family set off on a world tour to fill the kids’ visual memory with beautiful images. This year, your generosity will shine bright through the Sainte-Justine Tree of Lights.
Born under a lucky star
École Vision St-Jean
Romeo suffers from Chudley–McCullough syndrome, a rare condition that has been diagnosed in fewer than 50 patients worldwide. But Romeo was born under a lucky star that brought him to Sainte-Justine.
While he was still in the womb, tests revealed that Romeo was profoundly deaf and had a brain malformation. His family feared the worst. Against all odds, today, Romeo is just like any other kid his age: He dances, plays an instrument, is learning several languages in school, and much more!
An adolescence interrupted
Collège Villa-Maria
In the summer of 2023, Rosemary was diagnosed with cancer: stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma. After her diagnosis, the teen had to put her life on hold. She abandoned her lifeguard certification training and quit her part-time job. In her darkest hour, Rosemary was surrounded by a caring and capable team: Dr. Prud’homme, Dr. Champagne, and her new oncology counsellors, Philippe and Marie-André.
Above all, your generosity makes it possible to provide the advanced care that patients like Rosemary need. Though she’s now returned to her daily life, Rosemary was forever changed by her experience at Sainte-Justine.
Send a few words of hope to the children and families who will be spending the holidays at Sainte-Justine this year.
Quebecers have been actively contributing to Sainte-Justine’s mission of excellence since 2008 by making thousands of lights twinkle on the Tree of Lights in exchange for a donation of $5 per bulb. The support of the community is crucial in helping the teams at Sainte-Justine take pediatric medicine to the next level and remain at the forefront of innovation for young patients and their families.
In the past 17 years, more than $15 million has been raised to continuously improve the care provided to children from across the province.
Providing care in childhood has more impact to ensure better overall health overall than intervening at any other stage of life. More than ever, Growing Beyond for every child in a targeted way makes it possible to prevent and predict the onset of illness that could limit their immediate and future development. Acting early, often in the mother’s womb, means preventing the onset of more serious forms of disease. It has a transformative effect on the entire life trajectory of a child and his or her family.
There’s not a minute to lose to transform the life of every child in Québec. With its exceptional mobilizing force, youth allows our university-affiliated hospital to keep up with the best in pediatrics.
Growing beyond with us means transforming lives, for life.
